What is an MSON class? My school counselors, presenting details about classes for the next year to the student body, mentioned a few special offerings. “MSON classes are especially exciting,” they proudly stated. Intrigued by this prospect, I sought more information.
My high school was a Malone school, they explained. Students in Malone schools could take high-level courses with professors and students from other Malone schools across the country. The value of this network was immediately apparent to me, and I signed up for my first MSON class eagerly.
My MSON course, Diversity in a Global Comparative Perspective, has exceeded my expectations and revolutionized the way I think as a student. Interacting with students from different cultural backgrounds in various regions of the United States has completely changed my mindset of learning. Often, in my traditional classrooms, I listen to lectures by a teacher, but in my MSON class, I am an active participant in my learning process, and my peers’ colorful and distinct opinions provide unique and invaluable perspectives. Furthermore, the college-level course, upheld by the instructor’s expertise in the subject area, is a supportive and challenging environment conducive to academic and personal growth. In other words, if another student were to ask me what an MSON class is, I would tell them it is a course they would be grateful to take. I know I am.
