MSON 2024 Workshop
From Reacting to Responding: Charting a Deliberate Course
June 18th — 21st, 2024
MSON Host: Chadwick School
The past 4 years were full of rapid changes – from pivoting to remote learning in response to COVID or scrambling to draft a school policy on the use of AI, to multiple schedule iterations in search of the elusive formula where everything is a priority. Reacting – impulsive, hasty, often under stress – is exhausting and unsustainable.
Through a series of curated sessions, we’ll discuss and discover how to move from reacting to responding by identifying students’ and educators’ current needs, evaluating what’s working, and discussing where new tools or approaches would increase our effectiveness. Intentionally small and focused on interactive discussions and hands-on activities, MSON’s workshop is a collaborative enterprise – participants’ questions and interactions shape our collective learning. In addition to workshop sessions, we’ll have time for reflection, implementation, and networking.
Join us at Chadwick School in southern California where you can pause (by the ocean!), take stock of recent experiences (while enjoying delicious food!), and chart your path forward with similarly curious, insightful, passionate colleagues. See the tentative schedule below.
Day 1 – June 18th
Day 1 is an opportunity to take in our local surroundings, receive opening remarks from the Executive Director, and connect with other workshop participants during a casual cocktail reception.
Day 2 – June 19th
Day 2 is when we dive into the idea of moving from reacting to responding. We will also feature separate sessions tailored to new MSON instructors and Academic Liaisons:
- That Was Then, This Is Now: Insights on Changes and Constants in Student Learning
- CliffsNotes for Crafting Courses: Content, Pacing, and Assessments
- From Policy to Practice: High Impact Strategies for Academic Liaisons
- Reclaiming Your Time: Practical AI for Enhancing Instructor Efficiency
We’ll include time for implementation, as well as explore our host school’s campus, before concluding the day with a group dinner.
Day 3 – June 20th
Day 3 continues the focus on responding deliberately, and includes an opportunity for participants to experience one of MSON’s popular lab courses:
- Balancing Conviction and Connection for Thoughtful Decision-Making
- Finding the Time: A Roundtable on School Schedules
- Bridging Divides: Proactive Approaches to Hot Topics
- Students Do What?! Supporting Hands-On Labs in CSI:MSON
Day 4 – June 21st
Day 4 will allow everyone continued time for implementation and follow-up conversations, as well as insights from and about our students:
- Building Community, Broadening Connections: Integrating Polls, Podcasts, and Guest Speakers
- Through Their Eyes: Student Reflections on MSON Experiences
- The Pulse of Progress: Meeting the Cognitive and Emotional Needs of Today’s Students
We’ll enjoy a working lunch and conclude with plenty of time for everyone to head home or perhaps stay and explore more of beautiful southern California!
The attention to detail and enthusiasm for education shows clearly among the group; I feel honored to be here and look forward to further collaboration with everyone.
This conference was right on the mark – there was a lot of information, but really no wasted space and with thoughtful breaks and great content.
